Description
A hiking trail in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada after a moderate December snowfall. This ravine is part of an extensive trail system within the city which is maintained by the city for the benefit of hikers. The forest here is mixed woods - aspen poplars, evergreens, smaller shrubs like willow and alder, and berry bushes such as cranberries, saskatoons, and chokecherries. There is lots of wildife in these city ravines, besides myriads of birds such as waterfowl, herons, crows, robins, woodpeckers, and many smaller songbirds, there are coyote, deer, beaver, squirrels, moose, and rabbits. In spring and summer there is an abundance of wildlfowers such as wild roses and a plethora of wild berry bushes and small shrubs such as salmonberry. Throughout spring and summer there are always flowers of some sort in bloom.
Photographing in winter is often a challenge, not only because of the extreme weather, but the lack of color can pose a challenge to the artist. I find I have to be much more observant and creative in winter in order to capture the scene effectively. In this particular image it was overcast, which can work to your benefit in winter as I find the glare off the snow in the winter can also create exposure problems. Compositionally the trail leads one's eye into the photo, and I found an effective balance with the evergreeen trees surrounding the trail, as well the aspen poplar trunk in the foreground creates a sense of depth. Without the fresh snow on the trees the forest is barren, so I try and photograph in winter just after a snowfall.
I think this photo would make a very nice greeting card.
